The Merovingian and Carolingian periods are illustrated by a remarkable collection

the Saint-Etienne church of Waha.
An area is
attributed to the Famenne and to Marche, to its
geological and historical characteristics, to the fortunes and misfortunes of the town.
One room is dedicated to the Monument, a 17th c. sanctuary (see page 8). Crafts of

The ‘Walloon syndicate of forestry reproduction materials’, better known under the
name of ‘forestry syndicate’, is a public service of the Walloon forestry
administration of which the mission is the gathering, the treating, the conservation
and the sale of forest grains that are the best adapted and the most productive for
forestry. Faced by climate changes, it actively takes part in the regeneration of the natural heritage by guaranteeing to
maintain a high genetic diversity. Added to this vocation of being a ‘grain centre’, its original shape and unique
structure in arched spruce wood make it an interesting tool for promoting the use of local
wood in construction work.
Free guided visit for groups upon reservation from Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 16.00 (French, English - max. 50
pers.). The most favourable period for visits runs from September to May.

Natural site of the Fond des Vaulx
Rue du Viaduc - B-6900 Marche-en-Famenne |
|
At the gates of the town, the deep little valley of ‘Fond des Vaulx’ covering an area of
approximately 37 acres is a landscape in total contrast with the widespread Marche
plain. This band of limestone, the ‘Calestienne’, has been shaped during millions of
years by the acid waters of the Ardennes’ massif to the south. Numerous legends are
attached to this mystery-filled site …
Three signposted walks of 1.4 to 2.8 miles will make you discover numerous cavities,
an abyss, resurgences and rock slopes.
Here, the fauna, the flora and the geology are within the reach of all nature lovers.
A health trail and a covered barbecue are available to the hikers.
Rustic cows and sheep are often grazing in the valley and will amuse the young and
less young.

Saint-Etienne Church and stained-glass windows by Jean-Michel Folon
Place de l'Eglise - B-6900 Waha |
|
This remarkable Romanesque building (1050), listed as Major Heritage of Wallonia, is
surrounded by its ancient cemetery and fronted by an age-old linden tree under which a
White monk is meditating.
Oldest of the Romanesque churches of Belgium, it is the only
one to have kept its dedicatory stone, which commemorates the consecration of the
church on June 20, 1050 by Théoduin, Bishop of Liège from 1048 to 1075. This unique
and very rare relic is just as much an historical document as a work of art.
The church
houses the commemorative stone of the Perpetual Edict that carries the coat of arms of
Philippe II, as well as the blazons of Luxembourg and of the town of Marche.
The church
heritage also includes 16th c. baptismal fonts, a 15th c. Gothic theotheque, 15th and 18th c.
funeral stones, a 13th c. reliquary, a fragment of a 13th c. mural fresco, a 16th c. fragment
of Christ on the cross, a number of works by the Master of Waha of which one of the
most remarkable is the 16th c. Calvary.
Exceptional stained-glass windows, by Jean-
Michel Folon, depict the martyrdom of saint Etienne, patron saint of the parish.
An audiovisual montage (in French) shows the testimony of Jean-Michel Folon on the making of these windows, as
well as a few comments on the major objects of the church’s heritage. Another one is dedicated to the works of the
Master of Waha of whom a number of sculptures are also visible in the Museum of the Famenne.
Accessible daily from 9.00 to 17.00 (except during services).
Guided visit for groups (French, Dutch, English) upon prior reservation at the House of Tourism (T: +32(0)84/34.53.27 - infotourisme@marche.be)
